The Legacy of Arion: 80 Years of Innovation and Craftsmanship
Foundations of a Legacy (1945–1960)
- In 1945, Frank Herman began crafting bridles and harnesses in his garage in Papatoetoe. Determined to build a lasting business, he toured the North and South Islands, securing customers and refining his skills. By the late 1950s, he had developed innovative products like the Cow Legstrap and Chrome Leather Halter, while also beginning to import from England.
Growth and Evolution (1960–1980)
- The business became Frank Herman & Sons Ltd in 1962, shifting from harness saddlery to riding saddlery as equestrian needs changed. A purpose-built factory in Manurewa followed in 1968, doubling in size by 1974. That same year, Raymond and Warren took over, renaming it Hermans Saddlery Limited. New product lines like Nylon Halters (1975) and the Flair brand (1980) marked this era of expansion.
Innovation and Expansion (1980–2000)
- By the 1980s, the company had diversified, with Blue Tag Saddlery specializing in saddlery and another Hermans Saddlery focusing on horse covers and saddlecloths. The 1990s brought global partnerships, a new facility in Pukekohe (1994), and the introduction of the Trainers range of saddles along with other international brands.
A New Era (2000–2025)
- The fourth generation joined in 2006, driving further growth, including expansion into Australia in 2009. In 2011, the company rebranded to Arion EFV Ltd, a name reflecting strength, agility, and endurance—qualities that define both our products and the customers who rely on them. The Cavallino brand was introduced, innovation continued, and Arion became a proud sponsor of Horse of the Year. Even during COVID, the company adapted, manufacturing masks to support the community.
80 Years and Beyond
- Now, in 2025, Arion celebrates 80 years with the launch of a new website. With the fourth generation leading and the fifth coming along, our focus remains on the people who have made this legacy possible—our customers. As we move forward, we will continue to listen, innovate, and provide the products that riders, farmers, veterinarians, and saddle fitters rely on. Our commitment remains the same, to craft products that create trophy experiences for every horse and rider.
